Go Man Go

Go Man GO, a distinctive strawberry roan Quarter Horse stallion, was one of the mightiest speedsters to ever roar down a track. And he was just as mighty when he was retired to stud.

AQHA records show that Go Man Go's sons and daughters earned over $7 million, and that was back in the days when purses were not as lucrative as they later became.

Go Man Go was foaled in 1953. He was by Top Deck and out of Lightfoot Sis, a mare that J.B. "Johnny" Ferguson had picked up in Louisiana for the humble price of $300. She was by Very Wise (TB), and was in the AQHA Appendix registry.

The roan colt was foaled on Ferguson's ranch at Wharton, Tex., and began earning a reputation as a rogue long before he got to the racetrack. Robert Strauss was one of the first men to realize that Go Man Go would prove to be a handful. A lifelong horseman, he had been a jockey for years, and was breaking colts for Ferguson when it was time to start the roan under saddle. In an article about Go Man GO in Western Horseman (JULY 1990), Strauss was quoted as follows:

"I put a new halter and lead rope on him to take him to the barn. He broke both of them and took off before we got there. He ran like a bullet. He later bucked off a stock saddle while he was tied to the fence. He pawed Eldridge in the paddock. (Eldridge Strauss was Robert's brother and Ferguson's trainer.) It took me forever to get up enough nerve to get on that horse the first time, and I'd been riding all my life. I guarantee you he had buck on his mind every morning.

Go Man Go wrapped up his first season by being named 1955 World Champion Quarter Running Horse, Champion Quarter Running Stallion, and Champion Quarter Running 2-Year-Old.

The year 1957 was Go Man Go's 4-year-old season, and he was named world champion for the third time as well as champion stallion. He was still running strong as a 6-year-old in 1959.

So much has been said about Go Man Go, one thing we do know is, "He ran as fast by himself as he did in competition."

He died October 14, 1983, at Peckham's ranch. He was 30 years old.
